Diabetes education program recognized for quality

March — The American Diabetes Association’s recognition certificate for quality diabetes self-management education was recently awarded to Warren Hospital’s diabetes education program.

The certificate assures that a program meets the national standards for diabetes self-management education, an essential component of diabetes treatment.

Programs apply for recognition voluntarily. Programs that achieve recognition status have a staff of knowledgeable health professionals who can provide participants with comprehensive information about diabetes management. “The process gives professionals a national standard by which to measure the quality of services they provide,” said Sue Himmelreich, diabetes educator at Warren Hospital. “And, of course, it assures the consumer that he or she will receive high-quality service,” she added. Recognition status is awarded for three years.

According to the American Diabetes Association, about 4,110 people are diagnosed with diabetes each day. Many will first learn that they have diabetes when they are treated for one of its life-threatening complications — heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, blindness, nerve disease and amputation.
