Swallowing Services
Swallowing is often taken for granted, but thousands of people suffer from
difficulties with this basic human function. Swallowing disorders, also
called dysphagia, can be caused by:
- Stroke or brain injury
- Head and neck cancers
- Developmental abnormalities
- Surgical excisions
- Progressive degenerative diseases (Parkinson's, Alzheimer's)
- The aging process
Our experienced speech pathologists and radiologists evaluate swallowing
problems using video fluoroscopic studies, and treat patients using
VitalStim (TM) techniques. VitalStim Therapy is a safe and effective
treatment that uses neuromuscular elictrical stimulation to aid muscle
strengthening and rehabilitate the swallowing process. VitalStim therapy
shows good outcomes for our patients with relatively few treatments. It is
easily administered by a certified clinician and is pain free for patients.
Once prescribed by your physician, VitalStim therapy is administered by our
speech pathologists 3 to 5 days a week for one hour. Most patients can
expect their VitalStim therapy program to last one month.
